Jacketed Mixer — Temperature-Controlled Mixing
Jacketed Ribbon Mixer / Jacketed Paddle Mixer / Jacketed Plough Mixer
A jacketed mixer is a standard industrial mixer — ribbon, paddle, or plough type — fitted with an additional outer jacket surrounding the mixing vessel.
The jacket is a sealed space between the inner vessel wall and the outer jacket shell through which a heating or cooling medium circulates.
As the medium flows through the jacket, heat transfers through the vessel wall to the material being mixed — heating or cooling it precisely while the agitator simultaneously blends it throughout the batch.
Jacket Types Available
Full welded jacket:
A solid outer shell welded around the full circumference of the mixing vessel. Maximum heat transfer surface area. Uniform temperature distribution. Most common design for heating applications.
Dimple jacket (half-pipe):
Dimpled or half-pipe coil channels welded to the outside of the vessel wall. Lower media volume — faster heat-up and cool-down. Better suited for high-pressure steam than full jacket.
Single-zone jacket:
One continuous jacket with single inlet and outlet. Simplest design, most cost-effective. Suitable for processes requiring uniform temperature throughout.
Multi-zone jacket:
Multiple independent jacket sections with separate inlets and outlets. Allows different temperature zones along vessel length. For complex processes requiring staged heating and cooling profiles.
Heating and Cooling Media Options
- Steam — up to 300°F (150°C) — fastest heating — requires ASME rated vessel
- Hot water — up to 200°F (93°C) — precise control — food processing, pharmaceutical, cosmetics
- Thermal oil — up to 500°F (260°C) — high temperature applications — chemical, polymer, wax
- Chilled water — down to ~35°F (2°C) — heat-sensitive material cooling
- Glycol/water mixture — down to -40°F (-40°C) — sub-zero cooling applications
ASME Section VIII Certification — North American Market
All QUICK PROPACK jacketed mixers and tanks can be supplied with ASME Section VIII Division 1 pressure vessel certification — the mandatory standard for pressure-containing equipment in the United States and Canada.
ASME certification is required when using steam at any pressure, operating the jacket above 15 psig, or when your facility’s insurance or regulatory requirements mandate ASME-coded pressure vessels.
Key Applications
- Chocolate compound blending — heated jacket maintains chocolate at precise melting temperature
- Peanut butter, cashew butter, almond butter, tahini production — heated for viscosity control
- Pharmaceutical API blending with temperature-sensitive excipients — cooling jacket prevents degradation
- Hot melt adhesive powder blending — heated jacket for temperature-controlled mixing
- Wax-based formulation preparation — heated jacket melts and incorporates wax components
- Polymer compound mixing requiring temperature control
