How to Calculate the Right Mixer Size for Your Batch Weight
Formula:
Required mixer size (cu ft) = Batch weight (lbs) ÷ Bulk density (lbs/cu ft) ÷ Loading ratio (0.40 to 0.70)
Example: 3,000 lbs of spice blend ÷ 38 lbs/cu ft bulk density ÷ 0.55 loading ratio = 143 cu ft → Select the 150 cu ft model.

Mixer Selection Guide - How to Choose the Right Industrial Mixer
Choosing the right industrial mixer requires answering six key questions about your material, your process, and your facility. Work through these criteria before contacting our team.
Criterion 1 — What type of material are you mixing?
- Free-flowing dry powders and granules → Horizontal ribbon mixer (default choice)
- Fragile materials — coated granules, crystals, sensitive actives → Vertical mixer or conical screw mixer
- Sticky or semi-cohesive materials → Paddle mixer or ribbon + paddle combination
- Cohesive powders that do not flow freely → Plough mixer — mechanical fluidization required
- Materials with very wide density differences (3:1 or greater) → Plough or double shaft paddle mixer
- Heat-sensitive materials requiring drying → Vacuum dryer/mixer
Criterion 2 — What batch size do you need?
Formula: Required mixer size (cu ft) = Batch weight (lbs) ÷ Bulk density (lbs/cu ft) ÷ Loading ratio (0.40–0.70) your paragraph here

- Very shear-sensitive → Conical screw or vertical mixer
- Moderately shear-sensitive → Horizontal ribbon or paddle mixer

- Small liquid addition (under 5% of batch) → Ribbon mixer with spray nozzle
- Significant liquid addition — wet granulation → Plough mixer with high-pressure spray nozzles
Criterion 5 — What are your cleaning and compliance requirements?
- General industrial → Standard manual gate discharge, standard seal
- Food processing → CIP spray system, #4 finish, pneumatic discharge
- Allergen-controlled → Bomb bay discharge or conical screw mixer for near-zero residual
- Pharmaceutical GMP → CIP spray, #7 mirror polish, mechanical seals, PLC with 21 CFR Part 11 data logging
Criterion 6 — Do you need temperature control during mixing?
