The horizontal ribbon mixer is the most widely used industrial powder mixing configuration in the world. It consists of a U-shaped horizontal trough fitted with a centrally mounted rotating shaft carrying a precision-engineered double helical ribbon agitator.
The outer ribbon and inner ribbon are pitched in opposite directions — the outer ribbon continuously moves material from the ends of the trough toward the center, while simultaneously the inner ribbon moves material from the center toward the ends.
This creates continuous, opposing counter-flow mixing action throughout the entire batch — every particle is constantly in motion in two directions simultaneously.
The result is rapid, thorough convective mixing with low to medium shear. Typical mix times are 5 to 15 minutes for most dry powders and granules.
The horizontal ribbon mixer handles the widest range of materials of any mixer type, scales from 3.5 cubic feet to over 1,000 cubic feet, and integrates with the widest range of process options — heating and cooling jackets, vacuum systems, liquid addition spray nozzles, PLC automation, and all sanitary finish levels.
